The Casting Corner: Week of August 7, 2017

Welcome to The Casting Corner! TV news, particularly casting, comes at us very fast. Actors leave shows, join new pilots, take recurring roles in between seasons of their series regular gig. There’s just a lot to keep up with, which is where we come in. Here is the casting news we are highlighting this week:

Brooke Shields is coming to veteran NBC drama “Law & Order: SVU” this season! The actress has landed what is being described as a major recurring role. While the details are scarce, we do have one interesting piece of information about the new addition. Her character is set to shake up Olivia Benson’s (Mariska Hargitay) life. Shields called the character “very different” from those she’s played in the past in a statement. (THR)

“Suits” fans should be extremely excited to learn what kind of man Donna (Sarah Rafferty) would deem worthy enough to date. Jay Harrington has landed an arc playing Donna’s ex Mark Meadows. For seasons viewers have focused on Donna and Harvey’s (Gabriel Macht) potential relationship, so it’s nice to see Donna get some romantic shine that has nothing to do with Harvey. Donna is the best of “Suits,” so delving into her life further is always a good move. Harrington will appear on the USA series before his new series “S.W.A.T.” begins airing on CBS. (TVGuide)

“Grey’s Anatomy” has had more than its share of family drama and now it’s Deluca’s turn. Stefania Spampinato has been cast as Carina, Dr. Andrew DeLuca’s (Giacomo Gianniotti) sister. The arc will see Dr. Carina DeLuca is coming to Grey Sloan from Italy, which will frustrate her brother. According to reports Carina’s specific profession within the medical field could be considered “controversial,” so she may even ruffle feathers with some of the other doctors at the hospital. Viewers will even hear the DeLucas speaking Italian on the veteran series (EW)

“Black Lightning” has found its villain! Rapper Marvin “Krondon” Jones III has landed the series regular role of DC character Tobias Whale on the CW series. Whale is an African-American man with albinism who had political aspirations, but now is the vicious leader of The 100 gang. He will go head-to-head with Cress Williams’ Black Lightning, who will be suiting up again to take on Whale’s gang and clean up his neighborhood. (TVLine)

Peter Krause in “The Catch” episode “The Trial” – (ABC/Richard Cartwright)

Coming off a stint as con man Ben on “The Catch,” Peter Krause has found his next role. The actor, who is also known for his role on “Parenthood,” is joining Angela Bassett in Ryan Murphy’s new Fox drama “9-1-1.” The series follows a group of paramedics, police officers and firefighters as they navigate their high-pressure jobs and complex personal lives. No details who Krause, or Bassett for that matter, will be playing. (TVLine)

Looks like Peter Stone is getting a new lease on life. Philip Winchester will appear on the upcoming season of “Law & Order: SVU,” reprising his role from short-lived drama “Chicago Justice.” Longtime fans of the “Law & Order” franchise will remember Peter’s prosecutor father Ben Stone (Michael Moriarty) from the first four seasons of “Law & Order.” While “Strike Back” fans may prefer Winchester in a more action-oriented role, it seems like Dick Wolf is keeping him around. (THR)

Zach Florrick is leaving New York City and heading straight for “Riverdale.” Graham Phillips will appear in two episodes of the upcoming second season as Nick St. Clair. Nick is Veronica’s (Camila Mendes) ex-boyfriend from New York, who is going to be nothing but trouble. The party-loving, privileged and dark Nick will complicate Veronica relationship with Archie (K.J. Apa) and make some trouble for other Riverdale residents. (EW)

“Will & Grace” is pulling out the big guns for its upcoming revival. Coming off his award-winning and beloved role in Broadway’s “Dear Evan Hansen,” Ben Platt has booked a guest-starring role on the upcoming NBC season. While there are no details on the character he is paying, Platt will appear in the October 5 episode. (THR)
