TMZ reported early Thursday afternoon that Garry Shandling has passed away at the age of 66.
Shandling’s career spans film and television, starting out with writing for shows like Sanford and Sons and Welcome Back, Kotter. The writer eventually moved on to stand-up comedy in the ’80s, getting his first stand-up special in 1984, Garry Shandling: Alone in Vegas.
Following his time in stand-up, Shandling found himself back in the sitcom world with the Emmy nominated series, It’s Garry Shandling’s Show for Showtime.
The comedian then created the HBO mock-talk show sitcom The Larry Sanders Show, which ran for 89 episodes and was nominated multiple times throughout its run.
Shandling’s most recent credits include his appearances in Marvel films, Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Iron Man 2.
