Freeform Picks Up ‘black-ish’ Spinoff

black-ish‘s Zoey Johnson is going to college and viewers will be able to see her journey through the next four years.

Freeform officially announced Friday that they have picked up the black-ish spinoff. The show has been given a 13-episode order and will see Yara Shahidi reprising her role as Zoey Johnson and Deon Cole as Charlie Telphy.

With the working title college-ish, the story will follow Zoey as she heads off to college. She soon finds that not everything goes her way once she leaves home. According to the network, the series will take on current issues facing students and those working in higher education. Deon Cole’s Charlie will be moonlighting as an adjunct marketing professor.

“Our goal at Freeform is to celebrate the power, possibility and inclusivity of youth culture through our shows,” said Karey Burke, executive vice president, Programming & Development, Freeform. “Kenya Barris blazes new trails in the funniest way possible with ‘college-ish’ and we can’t wait to get schooled by the incredibly talented Yara Shahidi, who is the perfect addition to our Freeform family.”

Kenya Barris, Anthony Anderson, Laurence Fishburne, Helen Sugland and Brian Dobbins will be executive producers of the series.

“I never thought they’d let me put black-ish on the air let alone give me a spin-off. I couldn’t be more excited for the opportunity to continue working with Yara and the rest of this talented young cast. To any aspiring writers struggling to make it out there, I highly advise adding an ‘–ish’ to any working title you might have. It seems to be the move,” said Kenya Barris.

college-ish is set to premiere on Freeform in early 2018.
