KPonTV’s Pilot Impressions: ‘Designated Survivor’

One of the perks of having a TV-centric site is the availability to view pilots for the upcoming Fall TV season earlier in the summer. Many times these pilots are not for the purposes of reviews, but rather just to give the critics a taste of what’s coming. With our Fall Preview Guide in full swing, it’s time to share my TwoCents on some of the new shows coming this Fall that I think have a shot. Up now: Designated Survivor!

What if Jack Bauer was on The West Wing? Then you’d have Designated Survivor.

It’s well known that when the US Government has a big speech – such as the State of the Union Address – one member of government is left in a secure location in the case that the unthinkable happens and the entire US Government is wiped off the map in an attack.

Well, in the pilot – it happens – leaving Secretary of Housing and Urban Development, Tom Kirkman, the lone person alive. Played by Kiefer Sutherland (24), Kirkman is suddenly being sworn in as the President of the United States. Of course not everyone is pleased and the intrigue immediately ensues.

Kirkman’s wife, played by Natascha McElhone (Californication), will have to be Kirkman’s rock.

Other cast members include Maggie Q (Nikita), Kal Penn (How I Met Your Mother, House) and Italia Ricci (Chasing Life, Supergirl) to round out a great cast.

It will be hard to not see Sutherland as Jack Bauer as he runs, pants and yells at people with that gravelly voice. But this show looks strong enough to make you want to learn about Tom Kirkman too.

Designated Survivor premieres Wednesday, September 21 at 10 p.m. on ABC.
