One of the perks of having a TV-centric site is the availability to view pilots for the upcoming Fall TV season earlier in the summer. Many times these pilots are not for the purposes of reviews, but rather just to give the critics a taste of what’s coming.
With our Fall Preview Guide in full swing, it’s time to share my TwoCents on some of the new shows coming this Fall that I think have a shot. Up today: Pitch.
I’m a baseball fan. I love baseball. I love any movies or shows about baseball. Field of Dreams, Bull Durham, Bad News Bears, The Rookie, and yes, I’ll still stop and watch Summer Catch anytime it pops on TBS.
When FOX announced it was going to do Pitch, a show about the first ever female baseball player in the major leagues, I was instantly intrigued. How would they do it? Would it be all about where she dresses in the club house? Would she have some kind of wacky ailment that makes her have some bizarre super ability like Henry Rowengartner?
FOX did what was easy – the told a story as true as it should be. Yes, it’s about baseball, but it’s really about the people. In the way that Friday Night Lights was a people drama, centered on football, I think that Pitch could be the same around baseball.
The pilot has a lot of great moments, and a few that will work out as time moves on.
Kylie Bunbury (Under The Dome) leaves NO doubt in your mind that she could really play. Her athleticism shines through the dramatics that surround her lead character.
One of the spotlights for me is the portrayal of the team’s manager by Dan Lauria (The Wonder Years). He’s PERFECT for this role and it really suits him. I’d love to see what he can do with it throughout the run of the series.
Did I mention that Mark-Paul Gosselaar (Saved By The Bell) is in it too? He plays the teams ‘big star’ and his beard alone is worth checking out the pilot.
Pitch premieres Thursday, September 22 at 9 p.m. on Fox.
Will you be tuning in?
