SouthLAnd is great. It has great writing, great stunts, realistic cop drama, etc. But lately, the side stories and other layers of the show have been better than the cop action I usually love of shows like this. This week was one of those weeks.

“After 20 years on the job, Officer John Cooper has been wondering how his fellow officers will remember him. But right now the only thing he can think of is hanging on.”

Sammy/Ben: While the handsome duo did have actual cases (more about that in a few…), my favorite part of these two was the prank war they were involved in. It began with the guys hiding Sammy’s clothes while he was in the shower (darn us, we had to suffer through that…ha!) and my personal favorite, having one of Ben’s one night stands tell him she’s pregnant. In their main case of a shooting, Sammy calls one of the witnesses a crackhead. He counters with a complaint against Sammy. Sammy apologizes but says things in that neighborhood never change. In the end, the man gets shot.

Cooper/Tang: Cooper is celebrating 20 years (actually 22) on the job. He’s seen and done a lot of great (and not so great..) things. Tonight, he tries to help a gay teen whose parents just don’t understand. It’s not often we hear of Cooper’s homosexuality anymore. After all the time we spent watching him in gay bars, the show focused on his pill addiction. He saves the teenager after he tries to jump off a building. After they leave him at the hospital, Tang finds out the teenager managed to get out of his restraints and killed himself. Cooper did all he could. Elsewhere, they meet a woman who thinks her son is Jesus and Tang says she wants to take the Sergeant’s exam. The most random part of their story was when a guy that Tang shot a long time ago shows up to say thank you and shows her a tattoo of her he had inked on his chest. Creepy!

Lydia/Ruben: The duo had a case but pretty much all we need to care about is the fact that we still don’t know who Lydia’s baby daddy is! At least Lydia is finally talking about her pregnancy. Sort of.

I’m still waiting for something BIG to happen on this show. This is the first season where I’m not watching the episodes multiple times. It’s still great, don’t get me wrong. But something is missing. I love – LOVE – Cooper and Tang together. They blend perfectly. We also can’t forget to thank the writers for having Sammy take his shirt (and now clothes) off nearly every week. But those are just my two cents, what are yours? Leave the below!
